Isle Royale National Park August 2008

The timing of this year's vacation coincided with the Keewenaw Mineral Retreat, which Angela and her mother attended for the first week in August. I spent the first week with my family in Cross Village (northern lower peninsula of Michigan). My parents provided a ride back up to Houghton at the end of the week where we picked Angela up and drove to Copper Harbor for our boat ride to Isle Royale the following day.

A rather rough 3 hour ride on the Isle Royale Queen IV got us to Isle Royale. The next day, we took another ferry to the west end of the island to begin our approximately 45 mile hike back to Rock Harbor. Four nights and five days later we arrived in one piece, with a few aches and a few less pounds of body mass. We had a good dinner, a comfortable night in a lodge room overlooking the Lake, and a morning canoe paddle around Tobin Harbor before departing for Copper Harbor.

Our friends Steve and Sandy picked us up in Copper Harbor. We had dinner at the Eagle Harbor Inn and visited their place near Calumet to look at their minerals (Angela gets a lot of her minerals from Steve and Sandy) before hitching a ride back to Hancock. We rented a car the next day and toured the Keewenaw before heading home.

Our photo journal of the trip is below.
